Sometimes when you are strolling in the market and come across two products marked as Freezer Paper and Parchment Paper, you take a close look and think - they look the same. When two things look oddly similar it's easy to assume that their functionality might be similar too. Spoiler alert, they are not the same.

Whether you are baking cookies, prepping meals, or wrapping leftovers, it’s necessary to know the difference to save yourself from soggy food or oven related disasters. Wax Paper Global is going to break down the differences for you to stay on the clear side of the road.

What Is Freezer Paper?

Freezer paper is manufactured with thick and durable paper that is able to withstand the harsh freezer environment. It is commonly used for storing food in the freezer. The one side of the freezer sheets is plain paper, while the other side contains a slight coating that acts as a moisture barrier.

The advantage of this coating is that it helps to keep the air out and retain food fresh for a longer period of time. Freezer paper doesn’t wrap the food in a choking style rather it lets the food breathe. The main purpose of the freezer paper is storage and unlike parchment paper it’s never to be used for cooking. The plain surface of the paper has great printing or writing capacity as well.

Can You Use Freezer Paper in the Oven?

The main idea revolving around waxed freezer paper is - Storage. This paper should never be used in the oven. The plastic coated side, usually polyethylene, starts to go soft at around 110-120°C (230-248°F). Meaning that the wax or the coating starts to melt way before the oven reaches its standard heating point.

As it melts, fumes start to get released which would destroy the food present in the oven. For baking purposes all you need is a piece of paper that can bear the heat of the oven. A standard parchment paper should be a go to option where other baking parchment comparisons are also available.

Is Freezer Paper the Same as Parchment Paper?

A freezer paper is not similar to a parchment paper in any capacity. They might look similar but have totally different purposes to serve. The freezer paper has a plastic-coated side that allows the wrapped food to vent air, keeping it fresh. While the custom parchment paper for food contains silicone coating. Silicone is a natural heat-resistant and non-stick material.

If you look into parchment paper differences, you will get to know that a parchment paper's sole purpose is to withstand heat and high temperatures. While the freezer paper is a cold-storage specialist.

Freezer Paper vs. Parchment Paper

Freezer wrapping paper as its name indicates is meant for cold-storage and works well in cold temperatures. While parchment paper is a baking specialist with smart baking techniques that gives the food maximum protection while producing the most clean cooking experience. A quick differentiation table would solve the confusion.

Is Parchment Paper the Same as Freezer Paper?

Freezer paper rolls are manufactured from a thick kraft paper coated with polyethylene on one side. The plastic layer is pressed and bonded during manufacturing which creates strong moisture and air barrier.

On the other hand, parchment paper is made from cellulose fibres. These cellulose fibres are treated with acid to create a smooth and heat-resistant surface. Further the sheet is coated with silicone, which gives the paper its non-stick property and ability to stand high oven heat.

Can You Bake Freezer Paper?

Absolutely not. A custom food wax paper like freezer paper melts pretty quickly when it comes in contact with the heat. Baking is a heat-extensive process where high-temperature is the necessity to achieve. A freezer paper takes no time in crumbling under high heat damaging the food and contaminating it. A freezer paper might be able to bear mild heat below 100°C, which is good for wrapping hot food items instead of baking.

Freezer Paper vs. Baking Paper

In hindsight, baking paper is another name for parchment paper. Freezer paper is thick and sturdy while the baking paper is thin and flexible which allows the release of baked items easily.

Freezer paper is always denoted as a paper best for wrapping cold food items, but it's also extremely popular for crafts like stenciling and fabric printing due to the presence of plastic-coated side. On the other hand, baking paper can also be used apart from just baking.

We offer customization of baking paper with logos, patterns, and designs that make them desirable for baking shops and cafes to present their baked items in an aesthetic, professional, and versatile manner.

Freezer or Over? A Final Thought

Although both papers can look similar they have totally different scope of work. A freezer paper is meant to stay in the freezer securely wrapping the food while parchment paper is for high-heat baking. Both cannot be mixed in any circumstance as they are polar opposite to one another and could cause serious damage to the food and reputation of the brand.
