Manufacturing Process

Two main raw ingredients/materials for the sandwich paper include;

• Fibres - high-quality virgin wood pulp is used. Softwood pulp gives the strength and long fibers, while the Hardwood is blended for smoothness.
• Additives - fillers, retention aids, and wet strength agents are used if required. Special chemicals can also be used for sizing. These chemicals mostly involve alginates, carboxymethyl CMC, or starches. They fill out the pores and give the paper an enhanced grease and oil resistance property.

Preparation of Sheet

• Pulping - wood fibres are pulped and mixed with water; pulp is screened to remove any chemical contamination. Pulping is done till the controlled fibre length is achieved.
• Refining - extensive refining or beating gives the paper its greaseproof properties. This process increases the bonding and fibrillation, reducing the porosity and closing the way for oil. This is a crucial and energy-intensive process for a great barrier performance.
• Forming fabric - the refined pulp is formed into a wet web and spread across the Fourdrinier or cylinder machine. Water is drained, and uniform formation of the pulp is created. Porosity and density start at this step.
• Pressing - wet web passes through a line of roller press, which further drains the water and starts the bonding process.
• Drying - The Web is dried in a multi-cylinder dryer. The process is done in a temperature-controlled environment to control calendering defects.
• Supercalendering - the key mechanical step is supercalendering. Here, the dried sheet is passed through heavy calender rolls. This compacts the fiber, raising density, increasing surface smoothness and transparency while reducing porosity.

Chemical Treatment

To turn the dense sheet into a perfect grease-resistant paper, an aqueous size or water-based material like carboxymethyl cellulose CMC, food-grade polymers, alginates, or starches is applied. This chemical treatment helps to fill residual pores, forming an internal barrier that prevents oil seepage and protects food from moisture. This process is done through surface coating or in a size press, followed by drying.

Optional Coatings
